In this book you will learn what a teacher should know about writing and the teaching of writing. There are three sections: writing in the classroom, paragraphing skills and specific writing skills. The first section has three chapters. These three chapters provide a brief outline of the fundamentals in the teaching of writing. The first chapter starts of with some definitions of writing by some of the experts in the field, background knowledge to the teaching of writing, and some writing principles and techniques. This is followed by an explanation of the steps in the process writing begins with discovery and ends with proofreading in chapter two. Chapter three delves into collaborative writing and creative writing. The second section has three chapters. Chapter four describes paragraphing skills; the shape and form of the paragraph. This is followed by chapter five on guidelines for writing paragraphs and the connection between paragraph and essay, and ways to write concretely an concisely, and finally, evaluating writing. The third section includes six chapters of additional lesson which discuss some specific writing skills which essential in writing classroom. The skills are summary writing, writing resume, writing a report, editing, feedback, spelling skills, writing portfolio and writing for exams. Also included are models of the rhetorical modes of writing, questions for discussions and prompts for additional writing. In short, each chapter of the book has been crafted to ensure that this book provides a rewarding reading and writing experiences for ESL teachers.


Instructor Biography

Mariam Mohamed Nor had her TESL training at Maktab Perguruan Sultan Idris, Perak in 1976 and in 1989 from the same college, she obtained her Diploma in TESL. She pursued a TESL degree course at Universiti Pertanian Malaysia, Master of Arts in English Language Education, major in reading, at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia and her doctorate at University Malaya in 2005.

Abdul Halim Ibrahim is also a TESL lecturer at Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris. He had his teacher-training at Maktab Perguruan Kota Bharu in 1977 and has been teaching English Language ever since. In 2000, he obtained his Master in Education (TESL) from Universiti Sains Malaysia.
