Daily Conversation Mandarin Language 1 is produced for those who aim to master the basics of Mandarin communication within a short period of time. This book is not only suitable as a reference material for classroom use, but the way the book is structured makes it easy for self-learners to follow the lessons too. Learners will be exposed to Pinyin Phonetic System or Hanyu Pinyin, followed by vocabulary acquisitions, dialogues, sentence structures, and grammar. Adequate exercises are also provided at the end of each chapter to enhance learners’ understanding of the language. In addition, furtherance to the efforts at facilitating learners’ acquisition of the target language, the book also provides translated text of Mandarin to Malay and English languages to help learners make comparisons of the structural differences between the Mandarin language and their native language or primary language. Moreover, the book also contains six short excerpts about Chinese culture to expose learners to Chinese customs and arts as a source of input in acquainting learners with the perspective of the target culture. With this exposure, the knowledge of Mandarin in the background of Chinese culture can be strengthened.
Chan Swee Kai is currently a Senior Lecturer in Akademi Pengajian Bahasa, Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Cawangan Perlis. He teaches Mandarin courses at the university while also serving as the Coordinator for Mandarin and Japanese Courses in the department at the moment. He obtained Master of Arts degree (2000) from University of Malaya. He is one of the authors of Bahasa Mandarin Asas 2 published by Xueer Publisher in 2015.
Lee Chai Chuen is a Senior Lecturer in Akademi Pengajian Bahasa, Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Cawangan Kedah. Currently, she holds the position as the Third Language Coordinator. She graduated with a Master’s degree in Linguistics from University of Malaya. She has twenty years of experience in teaching Mandarin as a third language at UiTM. Her areas of interest and expertise include singing, drama and Chinese cultural performances. She won a Teaching Award at Anugerah Akademik Universiti 2016 based on her creative and innovative teaching and learning methods. Her passion, commitment and diligence will continue to enhance the non-native speakers’ command of Chinese language.
Wee Sheau Ping is a Mandarin language lecturer in Akademi Pengajian Bahasa, Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Cawangan Sarawak. She obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Chinese Studies (1996) and Master’s degree in Linguistics (2002) from University of Malaya. She has been teaching Mandarin as a third language for non-native speakers since 1997. Her research areas focus on Mandarin and Chinese dialects phonetics. She is the author of Buku Teks Bahasa Mandarin Kursus Pelancongan dan Perhotelan II and Learning Chinese Characters 4. She also has published three workbooks for UiTM’s Mandarin courses. She is a volunteer translator for Sarawak State Record Repository.
Soo Yew Phong is a Senior Lecturer of Mandarin in Akademi Pengajian Bahasa, Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Cawangan Melaka. He has been teaching Mandarin as a second and third language (L2/ L3) for non-native speakers since 2011. He holds a Bachelor’s degree of Languages and Linguistics (Chinese Language) and a Master’s degree in Modern Language Studies, both of which were obtained from University of Malaya. His research interests include Teaching Mandarin as A Foreign Language, Survival Chinese, Mandarin Translating and Editing, Sociolinguistics, and Chinese Lexicology. He is actively involved with statutory bodies, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) as well as private companies in Chinese language consulting services.
Teoh Joo Tong is a Mandarin language lecturer in Akademi Pengajian Bahasa, Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Cawangan Negeri Sembilan. She obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Chinese Studies (2007) and Master of Arts (2011) from Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman. She is especially interested in pedagogical approaches that could enhance students’ learning experience such as blended learning and learning motivation and strategies.
