CORRUPTION: ITS NATURE, CAUSES AND EFFECTS IN MALAYSIA
This book offers a grounded and critical exploration of corruption in Malaysia, set within the wider landscape of South and Southeast Asia. It examines how corruption operates, why it persists, and how its effects extend beyond isolated incidents into broader issues of governance, development, and public trust. Drawing on regional comparisons, empirical evidence, and selected real-world cases, the discussion shows that corruption is not simply the result of individual misconduct but is shaped by deeper structural factors such as weak institutions, economic inequality, and entrenched patronage networks. The publication also reflects on Malaysia's ongoing efforts to address corruption, highlighting meaningful reforms and continuing challenges. Importantly, it emphasises that corruption carries real consequences, weakening institutions, distorting economic outcomes, and widening social disparities. By connecting theory with practice, this work provides a more nuanced understanding of corruption and offers practical insights for strengthening accountability, transparency, and long-term governance outcomes.
