Do you know how a huge amount of data information with a very high speed and a long distance of over a thousand kilometres, is transferred? How does a doctor perform surgery using a laser instead of a scalpel? They are using a single, tiny fibre like human hair called optical fiber. Thus, a new optical amplifier is crucial to overcome the limitations of conventional amplifiers for recent and advanced communications. Meanwhile, pulsed fiber lasers have developed an incredible attention in recent years as a possible replacement to high-cost and bulk solid-state lasers for ultrafast technology with pulse durations down to the femtoseconds. In this book, a new Zirconia-Yttria-Aluminum co-doped Erbium-doped Fiber (Zr-EDF) is discussed as gain medium for amplifier and pulsed fiber laser applications. This fiber consists of Er2O ̧-doped ZrO2 rich nano-crystalline particles that have succeeded in generating both bright and dark pulses using 2D nanomaterials such as Black Phosphorus and Graphene Film.

Instructor Biography

Arni Munira Markom received her Ph.D. in Photonics Engineering from Universiti Malaya, Malaysia in 2016. She is the Head of the Industrial and Academic Networking Unit, FKE, and Entrepreneurship Coordinator at Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Johor. She received the Best Writer in State Academic Award 2021 and the Most Promising Researcher Award 2019 from UiTM Johor for her enthusiastic research and publications. She also won Merit of Distinction 2019 and Celcom Platinum Award 2020 for innovation competition through the Dark Pulse Zirconia Fiber Lasers.

Sulaiman Wadi Harun received his Ph.D. in Photonics Technology from Universiti Malaya in 2004. He has nearly 20 years of research experience in the development of optical fiber devices, including fiber amplifiers, fiber lasers, and fiber sensors. Prof. Harun has published more than 1000 articles and has been cited more than 13,174 times with an h-index of 50, showing the impact on the community. He also successfully supervised more than 50 Ph.D. students to completion. He received the prestigious award of Malaysian Rising Star 2016 from the Ministry of Higher Education for his contribution to international collaboration.
