Laboratory Manual: Introduction to Organic Chemistry is an easy-to-use guide for students at Bachelor's degree level to grasp all the concepts required in fundamental organic experiments, involving observations and the application of theory. The instructions are written simply, covering procedures such as distillation, liquid-liquid separation, recrystallisation, and qualitative analysis for identification of physical changes in functional groups. The lab manual also includes pre-lab mini-assignments to prepare students before the laboratory session, as well as further questions after the laboratory session, to increase their understanding of each topic.

Instructor Biography

Fazni Susila Abdul Ghani (Ch.M.) is a senior lecturer at UiTM with more than 20 years of teaching experience. She is an organic chemist with various teaching experiences in fundamental chemistry and organic subjects in A-level, diplomas, and degrees at UiTM. She obtained a Bachelor's degree in Pure Chemistry and a Master of Philosophy in Organic Synthesis from the Manchester Metropolitan University and the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology, respectively, both new, known as the University of Manchester. She is currently pursuing PhD at UiTM in Polymer Electrolyte.

Noraishah Abdullah (Ch.M., Dr.) is a senior lecturer at UiTM and has been teaching at UiTM since 2008. She completed her PhD in organic synthesis at UiTM. She obtained her Bachelor's degree from Universiti Sains Teknologi Malaysia (now Universiti Malaysia Terengganu) and her Master's degree from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. Dr. Noraishah is actively involved in organic chemistry thesis research areas, namely oleochemistry and analytical chemistry.

Syahrul Imran Abu Bakar (Ch.M, Dr.) is a senior lecturer and a research fellow at Attaur-Rahman Institute for Natural Product Discovery (AuRIns). After completing his undergraduate studies, Dr Imran worked as a method development and validation chemist for two years before pursuing a PhD in chemistry at UiTM, where he graduated in 2016. Upon completing his postdoctoral research, Dr. Imran joined the faculty at his alma mater as a senior lecturer in 2018, where he currently teaches a variety of chemistry courses, including general chemistry, fundamental organic chemistry, organic chemistry, advanced analytical investigation, and medicinal chemistry. Dr Imran is currently working on the synthesis of bioactive compounds and computational drug design. His research focuses on developing new compounds that have the potential to treat a variety of diseases.

Suhaidi Ariffin (Ch.M., Dr.) is an academician employed at Universiti Teknologi MARA since 2016. He received his Ph.D. in Science (Microbial Natural Products) from UiTM in  2016. The teaching and learning subjects that he actively involved in for the past seven years include general chemistry, organic chemistry, food chemistry, and analytical chemistry. His research interest is screening the bioactive metabolites from actinobacteria, flowering, and fruiting plants for anti-infective drug discovery. The past seven years of teaching and learning, research, and other academic and non-academic activities enabled him to execute any given responsibilities individually and as a part of a team in a timely and efficient way.

Zitty Sarah Ismail (Dr.) is a senior lecturer at the Department of Chemistry and Environment, Faculty of Applied Sciences, UiTM. Specialising in occupational health and safety management, she obtained her PhD from UKM Environmental Management and has more than 12 years of working experience in the field of safety and environment. She is an instructor for occupational health and safety courses, industrial safety and hygiene, OSH financial management, and noise risk exposure.

Hamizah Md Rasid (Ch.M., Dr.) is currently a senior lecturer at the Faculty of Applied Sciences, UiTM. Her main teaching subjects are forensic chemical analysis, organic chemistry, and general chemistry. She obtained her academic degrees from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia for her postgraduate and undergraduate studies. Her research focuses on material chemistry, porous materials, and modification of natural-related areas.

Najmah P. S. Hassan (Ch.M., Dr.) is a PhD holder from the University of Auckland, New  Zealand. She also obtained qualifications from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia for a Master of Science in Chemistry and a Bachelor of Science and Computer with Education. She is a senior lecturer who started her career in UiTM in 2001. As an academician, she has been teaching in areas such as analytical, organic, polymer, and fundamental of chemistry in diploma and degree levels. Her research area mainly focuses in organic synthesis and natural products.
